Chipper cash raised $100 M in a Series C investment round

Chipper cash, a fintech that facilitates cross-border payment across Africa, just raised a $100 million Series C round to more products and unlock more global opportunities.

The round was led by SVB Capital, a US firm investing in an Africa-focused startup for the first time. Existing Chipper Cash investors like Deciens Capital, Ribbit Capital, Bezos Expeditions and 500 Startups participated. One Way Ventures, Tribe Capital, and Brue2 Ventures also joined the round.

Okra introduces new product to solve CBN's BVN validation ban on fintechs

Several weeks after the Nigeria’s Central Bank stopped Nigerian fintech startups from accessing BVN verification, Okra has announced a new means of identity validation.

The apex bank in a statement in April banned fintechs and non-bank financial institutions from providing BVN validation service, affecting fintech startups in the savings, lending, trading, crypto, and payment industry.

The ban means the startup won’t be able to carry out KYC (Know Your Customer) with BVN.

Nigerian fintech startups that raised at least $1m in Q1-2021

The first quarter of 2021 has proven, to some extent, that fintech startups are Nigeria’s new oil. Fintech platforms accounted for about $202.15 million (78.94%) of $256.34 million funds raised by a total of 16 Nigerian startups during the months of January to March (only publicly disclosed deals were computed in this data).

Nigeria’s fintech landscape consists of 210-250 fintech companies. According to Frost and Sullivan, Nigeria’s fintech revenue is expected to reach US$543.3 million in 2022
